CROCHET JOURNEY
My Story
When I was just around 8-9 years old, I was first introduced to the art of crocheting. It all started when my mother send me out to collect payments of her loyal customer named Rosa that own her money from her Boutique Store. My cousin Rainelly and i walked to Rosa to collect the payment Rosa lived in la Fortuna which is at least almost one mile away from our house in Barrio Lindo, Cotui Sanchez Ramirez. When i got to Rosa house after collecting the payment. I had noticed Rosa neighbor is crocheting and teaching some other little girls as well. I got curious and when next door to Rosa neighbor and started to ask question. Rosa’s neighbor offered to teach me and my cousin Rainelly. We learned how to make chains, and the start of a hat. Rainelly and I one was allow to go over on the weekend, the lady wanted to us to pay $25-50 pesos per class. We wasn’t telling our mothers that we was going to the next town over to learn how to crochet. One day my mom asked me i told her and i show her what we were learning. My mother said “Your grandma crochets, you want to learn i will tell her to teach you guys. Rainelly and you don’t need to be going to anyone house to learn to crochet your grandma will teach you guys’’. My mother told my grandmother Senaida. She showed Rainelly and i how to create a simple chain stitch using a crochet hook and some yarn. I was fascinated by the process and couldn't wait to learn more.
Over the years, I practiced and honed my skills with the guidance of my grandmother and one of my aunts, both of whom were skilled crocheters. However, when I moved to the United States from the Dominican Republic, I stopped practicing as much as I used to. I didn't have the patience to keep up with it, and my focus shifted to other things.
But in the last year and half, something changed. I found myself drawn back to crocheting, and I decided to pick up where I had left off. This time, I was determined to perfect my skill and create beautiful pieces that I could be proud of.
I started by revisiting the basics, practicing my stitches and learning new patterns. With each piece I created, I could see my skill improving. I began experimenting with different types of yarn and colors, learning how to mix and match them to create unique and stunning pieces.
Now, I am proud to say that I am able to finish beautiful clothes pieces by my own hand with the skill of crocheting. It's been a journey, but I am so glad that I found my way back to this craft that I love so much. I can't wait to see where my passion for crocheting takes me next.
